Behavioral health groups carry four boards on one roster.
A psychiatrist, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, a psychologist and a licensed clinical social worker in the same state answer to four different authorities.
Four professions, four systems
- Psychiatrists: medical board, and the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact where eligible
- Psychiatric nurse practitioners: nursing board, prescriptive authority, a collaborative agreement in roughly 25 states, and the Nurse Licensure Compact for the RN layer only
- Psychologists: psychology board, with PSYPACT covering telepsychology practice rather than issuing a license
- Clinical social workers and counselors: separate boards again, with their own compacts at varying stages of implementation
No single roster tool covers all four, which is why most behavioral health groups run four spreadsheets and reconcile them by hand.
The prescribing layer sits on top
Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners prescribe controlled substances in almost every encounter. That means a federal DEA registration plus a separate state controlled substance registration in most states, each on its own renewal clock, and for mid-level clinicians the whole chain can depend on a current collaborative agreement.
